Highlight Film vs Documentary Edit vs Full Ceremony Film: What's the Difference?

When you start looking at wedding videos, you'll quickly run into a load of terms that nobody actually explains. Highlight film. Documentary edit. Full ceremony. Teaser. Trailer.
If you've found yourself nodding along pretending you know the difference, don't worry. Most couples have no clue when they start, and honestly, why would you? Here's the plain English version so you can work out what you actually want.
The highlight film
This is the one everyone's seen on Instagram. The short, cinematic, emotional edit set to music that gives you goosebumps in three to ten minutes.
A highlight film takes the very best moments of your whole day and weaves them into a fast-moving story. The walk down the aisle, the vows, a line from the speeches, the first dance, the confetti, the laughter. It's polished, colour graded, set to music, and edited to feel like a proper film.
This is the version you'll share with everyone. It's the one your mum cries at, the one you post, the one you'll rewatch a hundred times. If you only get one thing, get this.
Every one of our packages includes a highlight film as standard. You can watch some real ones on our films page to see exactly what we mean. It's the quickest way to understand the style.
The full ceremony and speeches film
Here's where couples get caught out. A highlight film does not show your whole ceremony. It shows the best bits.
But your ceremony is the actual moment you got married. Your full vows. The readings. Every word of the speeches, start to finish, including the joke your best man almost bottled. A lot of couples desperately want all of that kept, not just a ten second clip.
That's what the full ceremony and speeches films are for. These are longer, mostly uncut films of those key set-piece moments so nothing important gets lost. You get your complete vows and your complete speeches, exactly as they happened.
Both our Wedding Video Collection and Highlight Video Collection include full ceremony and speeches coverage, so you're never left with just the trailer version of your own wedding.
The documentary edit
This is the deep one, and it's our couples' best-kept secret.
A documentary edit is your entire day, start to finish, in order, with all the real audio left in. We're talking around two hours of footage. Every clip we filmed, arranged chronologically, completely unfiltered.
It's not cinematic. It's not colour graded. And that's the whole point. This is the raw, real version. The gossip while the makeup's going on. The nervous chat before the ceremony. The bits between the big moments that the highlight film simply doesn't have room for.
Couples who choose this don't want the polished story. They want the full window into the day, all the little in-between moments they were too busy to notice at the time. It's the difference between the best bits and actually being there again.
It's an optional add-on at £399, and there's a catch worth knowing: we don't keep raw footage forever. So if even part of you wants this, you need to say so early, ideally when you book. You can read more about the documentary edit here.
So which one do you actually need?
Let's make it simple.
If you want one beautiful film to share and rewatch, you want the highlight film. Everyone gets this. It's the heart of it.
If the thought of losing your full vows or full speeches bothers you, make sure your package includes the full ceremony and speeches films. Ours do.
If you're the kind of couple who wants absolutely everything kept, the in-between moments included, add the documentary edit on top. It's for the sentimental ones, and we mean that as a compliment.
Most couples end up with the highlight film and full ceremony coverage as their core, then a good chunk add the documentary edit because once they understand what it is, they can't bear the thought of those quiet moments disappearing.
The good news
You don't have to figure this out alone. When you book with us, we talk all of this through on your free consultation call and help you land on exactly the right combination for your day. No upselling, just working out what you'll actually treasure.
Have a look through our full packages to see how it all fits together, or send us your date and venue and we'll come back within 24 hours to talk it through properly.
And if you're still deciding whether video's worth it at all, our couples' reviews will probably make that decision for you.
